During Wizards of the Coast today, the company released new information about the Lord of the Rings and Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond partnership, including new art, card styles, and a full digital release through MTG Arena that includes draft, battle pass, and more.
With its release in the third quarter of 2023, Lord of the Rings and Magic: The Gathering will offer full digital gameplay through MTG Arena Alchemy and tabletop. The set format legality is Modern-legal, similar to a Core Set, and will have a full Limited Draft available for both digital and tabletop gameplay.
According to WotC, players will have access to a new battlefield and a full Mastery Pass with the release of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth Universes Beyond Magic, which is likely to be similar to the Alchemy Horizons: Baldurs Gate set.
The concept team has divided a full-scale image into 18 borderless seem cards, which have been used for several iconic LOTR trilogy battles and moments within the Universes Beyond set. Frodo and Gandalf face off against the Balrog Durins Bane in the game of the Pelennor Fields at Minas Tirith.
The entire Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth Universes Beyond set will be released closer to the third quarter of 2023, the sets official launch date. Players may also see the Universes Beyond Doctor Who set that is expected to be released in 2023.
