Lateral passes are fairly rare in the NFL, although they are sometimes used on last-second passes, such as trick plays, option runs, or last-second plays. In Madden 23, you can perform a lateral pass from anywhere as long as you have a teammate behind you. Here is how to execute a lateral pass or pitch the ball.
- PlayStation: Press L1
- Xbox: Press LB
- PC: Press Alt
The ball carrier will attempt to hit the closest teammate behind them, but they will execute a fake pitch if there is no one behind them. Be cautious when using the lateral pass, as your player might end up throwing the ball 20 yards back to a lineman or fumbling.
Select playbooks have a designed pitch, but there are a few that can be found in mobile quarterbacks, like the Ravens. The power option, triple option, and speed option are all runs that can use the pitch move.
The lateral pass can also be used on kick returns or punt returns, especially on plays where you need a touchdown at the last second. It is still a very risky move that may backfire quickly, but if there is no other hope, it is a perfect last-ditch effort.
