Idris Elba on Why He'd Team with Kate Winslet and Michael Fassbender to Battle a Rogue Lion on 'Beast'

Idris Elba on Why He'd Team with Kate Winslet and Michael Fassbender to Battle a Rogue Lion on 'Beas ...

Idris Elba has appeared in quite a few dangerous situations on the big screen, but his latest film, Beast, promises something different story-wise and also when it comes to the behind-the-scenes magic required to make it work.

Dr. Nate Samuels is a recently widowed man who travels to South Africa to meet his two daughters, Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries. Along with his two daughters, Nate meets up with a friend who is also a game reserve manager. While out exploring the region, the group encounters a deadly lion.

I got to talk with Elba about his experience bringing the story to screen with Beast arriving on August 19th.

The crew behind Beast wanted to embrace the fact that this is a huge undertaking in many ways, but it was also of the greatest importance that the film remain grounded due to its focus on the Samuels family dynamics, which Elba was particularly eager to tackle.

All these little things in one pot to try and make this a big, fantastical story. Lions dont attack human beings, and it is very rare for something like this to happen, so we wanted to include some reality into it. This is a family dynamic that happens in the midst of this, and let's all get thrilled!

What exactly was required for Elba to achieve that thrill? A VFX miracle. Yes, he has had a great deal of experience working with digital effects at this stage in his career, but Beast was, well, a different animal.

Were we fighting a lion, but obviously we were not. The marriage between what you see and feel and what you actually have to do in order to put that together was completely different from what Ive ever done before.

Elba took a moment to reflect on a what if scenario in which he would ideally like to be trapped in a vehicle being stalked by a rogue lion? His first choice? Kate Winslet, who we met while in a plane crash in a film. Michael Fassbender, who has magic.

Beast's performance with Elba, Copley, Halley, and Jeffries is extremely easy to support and root for, but I'd also happily wager on a team containing Elba, Winslet, and Fassbender.
