When we mention The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the Super Nintendo, there's no better pairing or comparison than when the 81monkeys Kickstarter campaign is involved. It promises an "endlessly-explorable world" in a rather lovely pixel form.
The Kickstarter campaign for World of Anterra was launched a few weeks ago, and the project has now been fully funded with (at the time of writing) 18 days to go, so there's still plenty of time to fulfill ambitious goals. These will not be for new content or unlocking planned content, but rather for fun little backer rewards.
World of Anterra promises a party-based combat mechanic, and a few open-world pixel RPGs are rare. Your button press will move your character to a better position on the 'grid' before you attack!
81monkeys has already developed a rich lore and promises fast, slick dialogue with a refined and modernized, yet clear inspiration from genre classic Ultima. And Anterra will exist in real-time, so the day and night will only last if you stop the game.
We could go on and on about how epic this pixelated adventure is, but 81monkeys has summarized some promised key features on its Kickstarter page, and we've shared them here:
- A vast and living world. Explore Anterra's oceans, continents, lakes, forests, and dungeons at your own pace. - Non-linear narrative. A completely new, retro-inspired system that allows players to play with no effort and with minimal interaction. - Reliable and intuitive user interface. Our interface is so great, it could be a game on its own!
We want to do this, curled up on the couch with a mug of something warm right now. But we'll have to wait till next fall/winter, because World of Anterra will be released in 2023.
What do you think of this Kickstarter project? Will you be picking up World of Anterra? Please drop your thoughts in the comments and let us know!
