Every six months or so, a rumor begins to circulate on the internet that Elon Musk, the world's richest man, plans to purchase Fortnite only in order to remove it from existence. This rumor was never leaked, it did not come from a trustworthy source, and it is certainly not true. Its rooted in a meme created as a joke back in October 2018.

A Reddit user named The-shadowxz posted a screenshot of a MarketWatch news story that headlined Elon Musk buys Fortnite and deletes it in the subreddit /r/funny. The name Mike Murphy appears on the screenshot, although he did not compose the piece. The screenshot was presumably created in Photoshop as a joke.

Elon Musk himself helped the joke, which grew 11,000 points and 560 comments on Reddit in three weeks, by posting the fake article and remarking Had to be done ur welcome. This implies that Musk agreed with the spirit of the quote, but it does not mean that he ever said it.
