Battlefield 2042 Virtually Feels Like A Final Video Game ...

Battlefield 2042 ate a lot of dust at its premiere, and rightfully so, because for a game that aimed to be launching as a premium shooter at a premium price point it definitely came out undercooked.

The majority of people said the game was poor, which I have always maintained was not strictly true, because a lot of what was there was actually fine, but it was just released in a shambles and unready state with DICE's permission, and without the pressure of having to release an unfinished game in the middle of a pandemic, I certainly held out hope the game would one day be better than fine.

I dont think the game is quite done yet, but you can certainly see Good on the way. The seemingly endless quality of life improvements to every other area of the game, from menus to icons, are doing just as much work.

Much of the early criticism of the game centered on how crude the game was and how it seemed to be missing so much of what made previous games better. Stuff like scoreboards and lifetime statistics. Stuff that's now included in the game. That's been fixed now as well. Battlefield 2042 now feels more like a cohesive, functioning video game, rather than a series of maps held together by tape.

In the world DICE created for this iteration in the series, everything just feels more rounded out and more at home. After a few nips and tucks Specialists now appear to be as serious as the climate-ravaged maps they're fighting over, and the maps are starting to build up enough in volume and consistency that they're forming the world as well.

The amount of polish and content here is enough to suggest that if you had received this in October 2021 rather than something that was actually thrown out the door, you might have simply thought, OK, this is the new Battlefield game, let's check it out. I know that meeting basic functionality requirements for a AAA game release isnt something we should be celebrating actively. However, in 2042, the release was modest.

In fact, things are going along so nicely if slowly that I think Good will be within reach once we have 1-2 new maps, maybe the same amount of Specialists, and some more weapons (sniper rifles have been ignored since launch) and the process of reworking the launch maps is complete (DICE are going back and adding more terrain and detail to many of them),

Of course, most of the games updates have come in the form of its first two seasons. Season 01 was surprisingly enjoyable, while Season 02 was canceled last week, and I was once again impressed with how everything about it is so much more engaging and enjoyable than what was offered at launch.

The new armoured vehicle, which sat somewhere between the LATV4 and the Wildcat in terms of speed, safety, and firepower, was a delight to drive around, and is already a recon players' favorite. Crawford, the new Specialist, has a mobile minigun turret, which is as stupid and fun to use as it sounds. Three different playstyles, all of which are just a short walk away.

Both of Battlefield 2042's seasons have been fantastic, bringing life to a game that many would have assumed had landed Dead On Arrival. Remember, though: AAA games are usually too big to fail, for better or worse, and 2042's slow recovery following a disastrous release is just the latest example of this.
