Beta footage can often be a double-edged sword: on the one hand you get to see some of your favourite games' origins - with worsening graphics and mechanics to boot - but on the other hand you get to experience a sense of lost enjoyment when seeing footage from a game that never saw the light of day.
After seeing GameXplain's latest video, we are in the midst of a similar situation - pfft, as if the Super Mario 64 bangers needed to be promoted. Apart from some pre-release Mario footage, the advert also contains a few clips from the canceled Kirby's Air Ride game on the N64.
Kirby's Air Ride was later released on the GameCube (doing the's' for an ultimately less powerful title, Kirby Air Ride), although the footage shown in the GameXplain breakdown shows how the game might have acted had the N64's diminished graphics potential.
The absence of any visual differences is revealed in the tiny amount of footage. It's possible that the N64 game's mechanics may have been a marked change from those seen on the released version. Notice how Kirby and King Dedede are standing-up surfing on their warp stars instead of their eventual sitting positions?
Tanks Caps provided footage for a five-racer Wave Race 64 console version, including original item sprites and character icons in place of their released versions, as well as original footage for GoldenEye 007 and Blast Corps.
