The House of the Dragon threw no time into establishing the various conflicts that are roiling the Seven Kingdoms. But one of King Viserys Targaryens' most significant threats is still playing out in the background.

Viserys experiences a minor wound on his back while sitting on the Iron Throne, as the maesters tending to him notice, the cut mysteriously refuses to heal. In fact, its spreading. In the same episode, Viserys receives a second cut from the throne, which similarly becomes infected and leads to the amputation of two of his fingers.

The fact that Visery's wounds will not heal is more symbolic than anything as simple as bacterial infection. The significance of being cut by the Iron Throne has deep roots in Targaryen history and Game of Thrones legend, dating back to the thrones' creation.

What does it mean to be cut off from the Iron Throne?

Aegon I Targaryen, the Visery's ancestor, created the Iron Throne from a thousand broken blades he had taken from his foes in Game of Thrones. The ironwork monster, as George R.R. Martin referred to it in Game of Thrones, was created with the intent of causing severe discomfort.

Aegons son Aenys succeeded his father, but was later murdered by Maegor, Maegor's brother. Six years into Maegors notoriously brutal rule, his nephew Jaehaerys Targaryen raised banners against him. He spent the night brooding alone on the Iron Throne, when one of Maegors many wives discovered him dead in the seat with one of the thrones blades sticking through his neck and his forearms being hit open with other

Maegor's death is alleged to be many, including that he committed suicide or that Elinor murdered him. Nevertheless, many believe that the Iron Throne itself is the reason for his death. This is what spawned popular belief that the throne chooses who is worthy or not of ruling Westeros, and that those who are deemed unworthy suffer damage by its blades.

Does everyone who gets cut on the Iron Throne die?

No, or at least not as a direct result of their wounds.

Daenerys Targaryen's paranoid father Aerys II Targaryen was commonly known as King Scab because he cut himself so often on the Iron Throne, but his death was not discovered until Jaime Lannisters sword.

The Iron Throne isnt a supernatural judge, jury, or executioner that disposes of the ruler itself. That being said, anyone who sits on the throne is already at a higher than average risk of death. If they are not a fit ruler, those odds increase exponentially.

What does Viserys's being cut by the Iron Throne signify?

Viserys' decision to name Rhaenyra as his successor or committing to wed Alicent Hightower only sparked more outrage.

Viserys first Iron Throne breach came at an unknown time, but his second injury is of particular significance, following his decision to remove Daemon from the line of succession. This ruling is one of the key decisions that ultimately led to the first Targaryen civil war. The second cut might also serve as an endorsement of Daemon's belief that Viserys is a weak king who is incapable of accepting responsibility.

Viserys is less concerned about his health than with political machinations and the devolution of Westeros. However, Viserys has already lost two fingers as a result of his removal from the Iron Throne. Only time will tell how much he will pay for his indiscretions as king.
