The rumors that Lea Michele cannot read have finally landed a job she had been wanting for some time.
Lea Michele made her debut on Tuesday at the August Wilson Theatre in New York. The star has received praise for playing Fanny Brice, a role originally created by Barbra Streisand in 1964. However, during the show, the audience apparently laughed out loud when Michele said the following: "I haven't read many books."
When lea micheles explained her FUNNY GIRL debut, the audience LAUGHED and GASPED. She said "I havent read many books."
Anyone who has seen the show knows that the line has long been a part of the script. However, given the current controversy surrounding the current lead lady, the whole thing has not been a laughing matter for the actress.
The alleged illiteracy of Lea Michele first sparked outrage when her late Glee co-star, Naya Rivera, wrote something about her in her memoir. The reports spread again around the same time that Beanie Feldstein would be replaced in Funny Girl. Michele has since responded to the internet rumors, saying she knew her lines every day while working on the hit Fox drama.
Michele made the set intolerable and subjected her to a series of horrific microaggressions for the first time. Shortly after the backlash, Michele issued a formal apology.
Despite this latest rumor, the actress has received rave reviews for her work on Funny Girl this year. She was given four standing ovations before the intermission, according to sources. As of now, it isn't clear when shell will take her final bow as Fanny Brice, but, until that happens, one has to wonder if other theater-goers will react the same way when she says the read line.
