Sony might penalize/reward player behavior in online games, according to a patent application ...

According to a new patent filing, Sony Interactive Entertainment is considering ways to reduce the likelihood of toxic online games. The company has developed a system to punish and reward player behavior.

Sony is one of the companies being investigated by lawmakers about its toxicity in online games.

A group of US politicians wrote a letter to Sony, Microsoft, and other game companies, urging them to combat harassment and extremism in online games. This has been a hot topic for a number of years as game designers have tried various methods of combating negative behavior with differing results.

The aforementioned patent, as discovered by Top Tier List (via ResetEra), was filed in September 2022 and published last week. It lays forth "a method of verifying behavior associated with the playing of a game."

The invention further includes analyzing the first player's behavior using an artificial intelligence model, in order to determine whether the behavior is abusive. "The operation of analyzing whether the first player's behavior is abusive is performed to determine whether the first player's character is accurate."

In its patent, Sony provides Fortnite as an example of an online game with abusive players. Epic Games, its creator, is one of the companies that lawmakers have urged to address toxicity.
