The Last of Us season 2 may be available on HBO at some point, although this doesn't seem to be a foregone conclusion in some ways? Yes, the ratings are already there, and we already know that there's another video game source material to keep things going.
Bella Ramsey (who plays Ellie) indicated that a season 2 will most likely be in the future, albeit with the network's sole involvement.
"It's pretty probable that [a second season] will be released if people continue to watch." It's up to the HBO guys... There's nothing confirmed yet, so we'll have to wait and see."

The Last of Us needs to continue to execute for the next few weeks, not that we are totally concerned about that. The jump from episode 1 to episode 2 in day-one viewers is one of the most significant in the network's history, and it appears that the show has already won over a lot of people who came on board with a certain degree of skepticism.
We're fairly certain that more information about another season will be available before we get around to the season finale later this year; it's quite possible, given HBO's history, that it wouldn't be available.
