Following a groundbreaking partnership between the BBC and the Mouse House, Doctor Who's brand new era keeps getting more exciting. Now it's been confirmed that the mainline series will feature many spinoffs.
Russell T. Davies, who previously directed the series between Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant from 2005 to 2010, revealed that he has an unknown number of spinoff projects in the works. In the process, Davies promised that the Whoniverse, as it is known, will go through "its next stage," one that is perhaps larger than any we've ever seen before.
When asked why he decided to make his grand comeback, Davies said, "I thought - without any criticism whatsoever towards the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within the BBC's controls."
Davies goes on to say that the cash-strapped BBC would not be able to carry on with its current franchise expansion following his initial departure, but it appears to be dissuaded of Disney's intention to spend 52 episodes of their assembled Star Trek series each year. He hopes to achieve something similar with Doctor Who.
It's up to Whovians to decide which direction these spinoffs will take. Doctor Who isn't expected to return until this autumn, with three specials featuring Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor, ahead of Ncuti Gatwa's arrival as the Fifteenth.
