Sega has revealed further details about the Deutsches Afrikakorps, the game's fourth launch faction, which includes the British, US, and Wehrmacht as part of the Company of Heroes 3 roster.
The Afrikakorps is Company of Heroes 3's "most radical and unconventional army," according to developer Relic, who specialises in the aggressive use of high mobility armor. Panzer III tanks will handle a lot of the fighting, but they can also be supported by powerful Tiger tanks that can be deployed via the faction's Armoured Reserves system.
The Afrikakorps will be doing a lot of towing and repair, and its dedicated support vehicles can be used to maintain damaged tanks and reposition the Afrikakorps' deadly Flak 36 anti-tank cannons.
In Company of Heroes 3, two Italian battlegroups support the Afrikakorps, including the Guastatori, who wear black clothing and carry flamethrowers. The Italian Combined Arms Battlegroup has brought with it the Semovente da 75/18 assault rifle, highly trained Bersaglieri infantry squads, and the Carro Armato M13/40 light tank.
The Afrikakorps served in Nazi Germany's North Africa campaign since, suffering an early defeat in the Battle of Kasserine Pass in Tunisia, where the Afrikakorps surrendered in May 1943, along with the remaining German troops.
Company of Heroes is available on February 23, but you can still find some of the finest WW2 games on PC in the meantime. It might be the perfect time for another chance to try out the great Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault.
