Even if the cover is somewhat depressing, Jujutsu Kaisen surprised fans in the best possible way. Manga covers vary according to volumes, conveying a different character each time. For its 22nd volume, Akutami finally made a decision long requested by fans: to have Maki as the cover.
Maki, the Jujutsu sorcerer without any curse ability, has been receiving increasing screen time in the story as the students engage in one of the most bloody and extreme fights thus far in the Sakurajima Colony arc. She quickly became a beloved character for her perseverance and for always fighting against all odds. For some reason, Maki had yet to be mentioned on the cover, and that moment has finally arrived.
Maki has become a fan-favorite character in the whole series, while her role as a ruthless and merciless hero while seeking revenge for her sister Mai has exploded into a worldwide sensation.
Maki is seen holding someone's pinky, according to Mai, her late twin sister Mai. That's a nod to Mai's promise to Mai before her passing, in this cover where Mai declares her "destroy everything."
The new volume comes right after Gege Akatsumi's long absence from Shnen Jump. Since August, the author has taken time off, making their triumphant return this past Sunday, January 22.
The next Jujutsu Kaisen chapter is scheduled to be released next Sunday, February 5.
