"Full Swing," a new Netflix documentary series about the greatest golfers, comes from the same team that created "F1: Drive to Survive," which featured golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Brooks Koepka. The series follows the human drama that unfolds throughout the course of each golf season as players travel the world to compete in various tournaments.
If "Full Swing" wins a fraction of the interest for the PGA that "Drive to Survive" did for F1, it would be a significant boost to a league that absolutely needs one. LIV Golf has splintered the game of televised golf into two leagues: one that has tradition but no star power, and one that isn't associated with the greatest-known events such as The Open, the Masters, and the U.S. Open.
It's easy to overlook that F1 was a mostly ignored legacy brand that primarily catered to older racing enthusiasts. It's largely the result of new ownership willing to make adjustments to accommodate changing tastes in entertainment. Allowing Netflix to air a weekly program about F1 — in addition to eliminating old restrictions like prohibiting drivers from using personal social media — is a model that golf would be wise to follow.
On February 15, Netflix will release "Full Swing." Watch the trailer here.
