Netflix Dominances with Eddie Murphy, Pamela Anderson, and Minions on Plane Flies to VOD

Netflix Dominances with Eddie Murphy, Pamela Anderson, and Minions on Plane Flies to VOD ...

Lionsgate's "Plane" ($19.99) jumped ahead in its first week on iTunes, #2 on Vudu's weekly chart (disadvantaged by its Friday release), and #4 on Google Play, which always falls a few days behind.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Disney), “Babylon” (Paramount) and “House Party” (Warner Bros. Discovery) all for $19.99.

Both "Plane" and "House Party" came out after their third weekends in theaters. That was expected for "House Party," the first of several films initially planned for HBO Max, but instead premiered with less-elevated theatrical play before going to the streaming site.

It's an unusual move for 'Plane.' The Gerald Butler action film performed well in theaters over three weekends before it was extended to homes, but the initial reaction suggests that it's worthwhile to move rapidly.

"M3GAN" (Universal/$19.99) continues to receive excellent rentals, ranking #1 at Vudu and Google Play, and second at iTunes. "Wakanda Forever" is third at iTunes and Vudu, and second on Google Play.

The best new straight-to-VOD release in recent weeks is 'Alice, Darling,' which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year before a limited December and full January release, with #4 at iTunes Best.

“Alice, Darling,” said the narrator.

Lionsgate is a British company.

"Babylon" climbed to as high as #4 on iTunes this week. It also placed on Vudu. "House Party" is only available on Vudu, where its PVOD pricing elevates it there in its revenue-based rankings.

Last week, the Oscar nominations for "Top Gun: Maverick, "Triangle of Sadness," and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" each topped the list.

"The Woman King" (Sony/$5.99) surpassed "Plane," "Wakanda Forever," "M3GAN," "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" (Universal/$19.99), and "Alice" on all three charts this week (the holiday was on Thursday).

The film "You People" with Eddie Murphy remained #1 on Netflix this week. Instead of going to Peacock, Netflix continues to benefit as Universal's Illumination animation partner. So it got "Minions: The Rise of Gru," the biggest theatrical cartoon release since January.

Normally, Netflix would have it as a #1 slot, as did "Sing 2," which was only recently dropped from their top 10 list. Yet "You People" held it off even over the weekend, when kids normally elevate animated shows. "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile," from Sony, dropped it out initially at #2, with the older "Flushed Away" on their chart.

”Pamela: A Love Story,” an original documentary about Pamela Anderson, was at #3 most of the week (it just fell to fifth). Two other original films round out the top 6, including ”Viking Wolf,” a Norwegian horror film, #6, and “True Spirit, an Australian film about a teenage girl who sailed solo around the world at #6.

"Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story" and Netflix's big Oscar nominee "All Quiet on the Western Front" both drew attention as "vintage" older titles.
