After a 10-year absence, Professor Layton is making his Nintendo Switch debut ...

After nearly a decade of being out of the game, fans of the Professor Layton franchise finally have something to cheer about. LEVEL-5 and Nintendo have confirmed that everyone's favorite gentlemanly puzzle-solver is finally on his way to a new adventure.

Professor Hershel Layton and his apprentice Luke Triton look to be returning to the Nintendo Switch for the first time, although it won't be the first introduction of the franchise on the system.

Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy was the latest installment in the Layton franchise that followed Katrielle Layton, Professor Layton's daughter, in 2017. It was released in 2017 on 3DS and mobile before making the switch a year later.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy on 3DS was released in 2013 or 2014, depending on your region, but that was released in English in August 2014, almost two years after its Japanese release.

The New World of Steam is a game that is currently in development and Professor Layton will make his return in the future. The visuals shown in the trailer do demonstrate a new, distinct art style and some steampunk elements for the world, but that's all.

LEVEL-5 will put in the effort to bring Layton to a new generation of puzzle-solvers. That will hopefully result in new mechanics, a rich narrative, and the same exceptional character writing that the franchise is well-known for.

As development for The New World of Steam progresses, we should expect more from the game in the coming years, and The New World of Steam should be the first Professor Layton title to be released with a shared worldwide release rather than a fixed timeline.
