Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is a popular MCU film because it will have huge implications for the entire MCU. However, an early preview clip raised a curious question about Kang and what he's been up to before the general public meets him.
What is Kang's response in the video?
"I'm an Avenger" is shown in a YouTube clip from Quantumania a few days ago. Ant-Man attempts to intimidate Kang, saying: "I'm an Avenger."
Nevertheless, Kang intervenes and asks Ant-Man, "Have I killed you before?" Kang then adds that "they all blur together after a while. You're not the one with the hammer?" Implying that Kang has previously met and killed other Avengers.
Has Kang fought the Avengers before?
Kang has fought the Avengers many times in the comics, most particularly in the Kang Dynastystoryline, but he has yet to slay horns with the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is his cinematic debut.
This sentence might provide a fascinating insight into Kang's history. At the end of Loki season one, He Who Remains explained that Kang started the Multiversal War, aiming to overthrow all other universes. If an event like this occurred, it makes sense that any Avengers team found within Kang's universe, or the universe he was invading, would try to contain him, leading to Kang clashing with the heroes.
Kang doesn't state the gender of the "one with the hammer," which would explain why he asks Ant-Man whether he is the "one with the hammer." In fact, the last Avengers team he fought might have featured Mighty Thor rather than Thor. This would also explain why they all "blur together" after a while, since each version is different, despite working off a similar base.
Another possibility is that time travel is involved in some way. Kang's comic book version frequently travels through time in order to change history in order to turn things in his favor or remove his foes from history. So from Kang's perspective, he's already faced the Avengers. However, this confrontation will happen in the future.
This may explain why Kang asks Ant-Man if he's killed him previously. Kang might be trying to determine the causality and history of his current timeline in order to be able to manipulate events more effectively, or he might be trying to verify whether previous changes to the timeline worked.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will give us an insight into what these previous battles with the Avengers looked like. However, one thing is certain, the Avengers in this universe should be on their guard as Kang might very well be their most dangerous foe to date.
