To identify your gear, you first need to unlock the Room of Requirement. The Desk of Description is located in the Room of Requirement; pressing the interact button to identify will identify any unidentified gear in your inventory.
As soon as the door is opened, the Desk of Description comes with the Room of Requirement, eliminating the need to acquire a spellcraft or summon the desk yourself.
