Why Wrath of the Lich King is World of Warcraft at its finest in Return of the King

Why Wrath of the Lich King is World of Warcraft at its finest in Return of the King ...

World of Warcraft, the greatest MMORPG game of all time, dates back to Macintosh, Internet Explorer, and the first Internet revolution. Seeing the unquestionable success of the original Warcraft real-time strategy game, Blizzard Entertainment continued expanding the Warcraft universe, eventually becoming the number one place on the charts with two more RTS Warcraft games, an MMORPG that suddenly gained popularity, and a card game that reinforced the meticulously crafted story.

Although Warcraft wreaks havoc on first-generation gamers, the historical impact of the franchise we know today began only with the release of World of Warcraft in 2004. With every new expansion, Blizzard gathered more and more dedicated WoW soldiers that would scramble to the finish to get a taste of fresh WoW content. Since WoW and The Burning Crusade sparked the interest of fantasy lovers, the next expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, was set for success.

Everything in and about WOTLK ruffled the WoW community to an extent that the game reached a milestone of 12 million subscribers over the course of its expansion. It also had an immersive and complex narrative that finally concluded the story of Arthas Menethil's amazing twist.

WOTLK will be released on the Classic servers on September 26 for the first time, making a deep dive into why the expansion was the golden era of WoW ever so important. We will discuss the major points that differentiated the expansion from the rest of the pack and made it the king of WoW expansions.

Thrilling gameplay that does not overcomplicate traditional systems

WOTLK strove to follow WoW's established success formula, including PvP, raids and dungeons, open-world content, engaging yet simple professions, and, most important, well-developed classes.

Since they defined WoW for many gamers, WOTLK only focused on fine tuning the classes, adding talents, and expanding the game's already existing features. On top of that, the expansion prioritized class identity and fantasy, including classes like Hex for Shamans or Titans Grip for Warriors.

WOTLK's professions are, unlike in retail WoW, a meaningful choice that handsomely rewards the time and effort you devote to leveling them. Craftable mounts, toys, and useful tools include MOLL-E, a portable mailbox that improves quality of life and transforms the profession system into a more satisfying income generator.

The original WOTLK game's leveling speed was lowered because to class quality-of-life changes that allowed players to spend more time killing mobs.

Everyone gets a piece of gear

WOTLK introduced little to no new features, but rather focused on improving the systems introduced in TBC, such as heroic dungeons, 10-and-25-man raids, and armor tokens awarded after each boss kill.

The absence of it is usually the reason of frustration among WoW players, and gear tokens in WOTLK that eventually guaranteed you a piece of gear reduced that stress to a minimum. WOTLK was a golden age of meaningful and steady gear progression for everyone.

Blizzard got the opportunity with WOTLK to develop unique and more challenging encounters that would still be easy for casual raiders to grasp. So, we saw the rise of Hard Modes that not only challenged the most well-versed raiders but also offered a better and bigger loot table.

A new outlook on PvP

Since the beginning of WoW, PvP has been the bane of the game, mainly because WoW has many contributing factors to a duel, let alone a teamfight, like trinkets, talents, and potion. This often results in imbalance and steamrolling that isnt enjoyable for anyone.

WOTLK Arenas emphasized the importance of dispels to avoid excessive preparation and steamrolling. Because it became more difficult to stomp the opposing team with consumables, skill expression grew in importance. Both large-scale battlegrounds, Isle of Conquest and Strand of the Ancients, proved to be quite an adventure.

A storyline worth remembering

WOTLK's main selling points are without a doubt the gloomy yet menacing Northrend that dates back to the Warcraft franchise. The Lich King returns in WOTLK after years of awakening only to cover the world of Azeroth again in the Plague of Undeath. We, the righteous heroes, bravely go to Northrend to put an end to the Lich King and his endless armies once and for all.

WOTLK's approach to Arthas Menethil and the Lich King is simply astonishing. It not only develops the story with great care for the characters and their personalities, but it also delivers astonishing dialogues that will send shivers down your spine. On top of that, WOTLK treads cautiously not to retcon or waste old and precious lore.

WOTLK is the peak of WoW design

WoW has been and never will be a perfect MMOPRG that meets everyones standards. However, Blizzards efforts to establish and shape the MMORPG genre with WoW must be taken into account; imagining the MMORPG genre without WoW is impossible.

WOTLK still surpasses both WoW and TBC as the most popular WoW expansions, with its slick gameplay design based on the original WoW and TBC, well-thought-out PvP and PvE, and its distinctive narrative rooted in Warcraft's very beginnings.
