After months of speculation about a possible fox girl character, Overwatch 2 has just announced a new support hero, Kiriko. But in pure gamer fashion, the Overwatch community is already speculating about what hero will be next.
Because of Overwatch 2's new battle pass technology, the developers have created a content roadmap for the game. A tank hero will be included with OW2 season two as part of the battle pass.
It's currently unknown who this tank hero will be, although the Overwatch community has some suggestions, with most fans referring to Mauga.
When Baptistes' support hero was first introduced, Mauga was shown wearing a slew of tattoos and vibrant clothing, making him a standout character in the novel. When in combat, Mauga is equipped with heavy armor, an energy shield, and two machine guns, making him the perfect tank hero for the new aggressive meta.
Blizzard devs seemingly confirm Mauga
A post on Reddit appeared to confirm suspicions as the Overwatch community began yelling about the possibility of Mauga.
In a since-deleted video, a French content creator known as Potxeca had spoken with prominent Overwatch 2 developers, with names like Aaron Keller and Geoff Goodman indicating that Mauga might be the next tank hero following Junker Queen.
Many people were ecstatic that this was not from Blizzard itself, despite the fact that it was. Others noted that plans may change, meaning that even if the source is legitimate, the developers may choose to go with another hero later on.
Mauga has been talked about continuously since, but Blizzard has yet to confirm or refute that Mauga will be included into Overwatch 2.
Blizzard explains new heroes in Overwatch 2
There will be 35 heroes in the game when it first launches, including Sojourn, Junker Queen, and Kiriko. The new heroes are all equipped with a set that is ideal for the new five-vs-five playstyle and are designed to have lesser hard counters to provide players with a wide range of effective heroes in any situation.
According to a recent blog post from Blizzard, the new heroes that will be released with each season, including Kiriko and the upcoming tank, will not be used in Competitive modes until a few weeks after the season launches. This will allow the developers to fine-tune each hero as needed and allow players to experiment with them.
We believe that launching new Overwatch 2 heroes through the Battle Pass system, because of this shift in design approach to heroes, is fair to our players, respects the competitive nature of the game, and fits with our intention of supporting Overwatch 2 as a live service moving forward.
On the free track of each battle pass, new heroes will be unlocked at tier 55. Players will get them automatically when they purchase the premium version of the battle pass.
Blizzard has stated that every other season, after the new tank hero is introduced in season 2, there will be a new hero. This means that there will be additional heroes in seasons four and six.
