Paul Mescal Recalls My Meaty First Role in a Sausage Commercial: I Was Poor and Had to Pay Rent ...

Paul Mescal had something more like Oscar Mayer on his mind before earning his first Oscar nomination.

The resurfaced ad for Irish sausage brand Denny, which was used in a controversial 2018 commercial, is "a little bit of Irish legend."

Mescal played the role of an Irish teenager who wants to travel the world after learning about a beans and bangers breakfast that the founders of the Denny brand taught people how to cook bacon around the world.

Mescal said during BBC Radio 4's "Today" (via Insider): "It was like, I loved the craft of it, but then I was a poor person."

Mescal shared that he ate each sausage on every bite, accumulating about 15 links in a morning.

“It's better to eat 15 sausages in a morning than to have to spit them out into a bucket,” Mescal said.

"If I ever feel like I'm too big for my boots, it's somewhere that we shouldn't forget that I promoted sausages when I finished drama school," said the actor.

Mescal will not be re-eating the Denny again anytime soon, as discussed by the BBC.

'I think Irish people are incredibly proud,' Mescal said of British GQ, 'It's like tall poppy syndrome. I've witnessed it with other Irish actors or musicians. It's kind of ironic because some people will be like, 'Hey, look at him off on his high horse drinking a pint in London.'

“Had I lived in London or Los Angeles or New York, there would be a clearer path.” He admitted. I knew there were Irish actors, but none of them came from Maynooth, so it was the school musical. I didn't know you could have it as a profession. I went through schools playing Gaelic football.”
