The call to boycott the game has served as a particularly loud anchor in the Hogwarts Legacy debate, as the game continues to reverberate its triviality in embracing trans issues, but also to carry increasing antisemitic associations as time goes on.
Despite its popularity, the game maintains its position at the all-time high of Steam's most-played titles, settling in at 13th place at the time of writing, nestled between such gaming behemoths as Terraria and Capcom Arcade Stadium. However, with the game officially launching to wider audiences just today, the game will have plenty of time to rack up more numbers, even if a portion of the purchased copies was for the purpose of trolling.
Despite the apparent failure of the boycott, the calls for it to remain strong as ever, which may reveal the true purpose behind such an action. Regardless of what anyone believes, the boycott is not about extortioning J.K. Rowling's salary.
It's about delivering a message.
Given the fact that Rowling's financial independence will remain as untouchable no matter how many people purchase the game, consider not the guilt you may feel in contributing to her bank account, but the fact that you remain unaffected by all of the things that Hogwarts Legacy represents, not just as a game, but as a cultural attitude.
