Jeff Loveness, the writer of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, shared some thoughts on the connection between the Multiverse and the Quantum Realm.
Time appears to be intrinsically linked to the Multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which isn't necessarily the case in the comics.
In Avengers: Endgame, time travel was first introduced back, both to commemorate half of existence and to tease the next Marvel Cinematic Universe series. However, the Avengers must learn how to maneuver the Quantum Realm.
Given the additional technicalities of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there must be a connection to the Multiverse.
When will viewers get to know this?
The Multiverse's Connection Between the Quantum Realm and the Multiverse
Ant-Man and the Wasp are discussed in an interview with Marvel.com. Both the writer Jeff Loveness and the producer Stephen Broussard discussed the relationship between the Multiverse and the Quantum Realm.
The Quantum Realm is "a world unto itself, not unlike Asgard or Wakanda," according to Broussard.
"The Quantum Realm is an idea that is as broad as any of the other MCU worlds we've explored to date... It's a world unto itself, similar to Asgard or Wakanda or the world of the mystic arts in Doctor Strange. It's been really, really fun to get the chance to establish something that big in part three of a film."
Loveness chimed in, saying they considered the place to be "like the Multiverse's basement," which is still "unexplored."
"We really wanted to construct it from the ground up, and we thought, how do we make it different from just outer space, how do we make it different from underwater like Namor's kingdom Talokan?" "We came up with [the idea] that basically, it's like the basement of the Multiverse. It's this connected limbo outside of space and time."
Basement with Multiversal Potential
The idea of the Quantum Realm as the Multiverse's basement is certainly an interesting way of thinking about the concept.
Does that mean there is only a single Quantum Realm? And not one per timeline, or perhaps for a certain set of timelines?
Regardless, there are still a lot of questions to be answered. Quantumania will hopefully provide some more explanations for fans, although there will certainly be plenty more left for The Kang Dynasty to explore.
Loki's second season allows for the same issues to be raised.
The MCU may throw a wrench into everything and add some problems; what if there is a different method to manipulate time other than the Quantum Realm? After all, Kang has the ability to time-travel with his suit in the source material.
Doctor Doom has even designed their own time machines. All that to say, there is a precedent for utilizing alternate methods.
