Illumination is hoping to have some fun with Super Mario Bros. Movie enthusiasts ahead of the Super Bowl. Not exploiting the plumbers' popularity for the Super Bowl audience would be a waste of money.
The commercial seems to be heavily inspired by 1990 television commercials, although it does have a retro feel to it. The song used for the video included a funny rap and iconic franchise music. Both Mario and Luigi help repair a New York woman's clogged sink while bobbing their heads to the music and looking directly at the camera.
The pair takes the time to record a testimonial from the woman, who obviously cannot hide the fact that she is reading a script. The commercial concludes by directing fans to dial 929-55-MARIO, which is a functional number. You can also text it to receive an automated message and a link to join the community.
The Mario Bros. are not shy about putting negative reviews on their website.

On April 7, the Super Mario Bros. film will be released in cinemas, and fans have already received teases of key characters, including Mario's confrontation with Donkey Kong and an impressive poster featuring Bowser.
