The Chris Pratt-led Garfield film is coming back, but it's still not on a Monday. In a series of updates about their upcoming films, Sony Pictures has announced that the animated feature would be released on May 24, 2024 rather than the previously scheduled February 16, 2024, premiere date. However, it does put the film in a better position as it is now scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.
Garfield is inspired by Jim Davis' iconic orange cat, which has been a part of pop culture since 1978 when the comic strip began its run. The film is still in pre-production, but it's likely to see the rest of Garfield's pals, particularly his owner Dave and his dog pal Odie. This is the first time the entire family has been shown on the big screen since Bill Murray took up the role for 2004's Garfield: The Movie and its 2006 sequel Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties.
Pratt will play Vic as Garfield's father in the next Guardians of the Galaxy film, Illumination, and Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. film in 2023. More recent casting has been revealed for Garfield including Hannah Waddingham, Nicholas Hoult, and Cecily Strong.
Mike Dindal will direct the film, his first role as a director in over 17 years. He spent most of his career on animated films, beginning in 1997 with the Scott Bakula-led Warner Bros. film Cats Don't Dance, and concluding with the Disney film Chicken Little. With the exception of The Emperor's New Groove, Dindal was joined by David Spade, John Goodman, Eartha Kitt, and Patrick Warburton, who also acted as his screenplay writer for
DNEG Animation is the studio that is directing the film. They have previously worked on Ron's Gone Wrong as well as Kid Cudi's upcoming animated special Entergalactic, which will be released later this month on Netflix. Davis is also on board as an executive producer with Bridget McMeel and Craig Sost.
Garfield will not be released in cinemas until May 24, 2024, but for the time being, check out a video from Collider with Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard before the release of Jurassic World Dominion.
