Fans of Constantine and the DC Comics source material have been hoping for years to see Keanu Reeves reprise his role on the big screen. Surprise! Its finally happening. Warner Bros is officially developing another Constantine film where Reeves will reteam with the director of the first film, along with J.J. Abrams being among its producers.
Francis Lawrence, who has directed much of the Hunger Games franchise, along with Water For Elephants and Red Sparrow, is set to direct the untitled return of Keanu Reeves John Constantine, according to Deadline. The upcoming film will be written by Akiva Goldsman, who co-developed the Titans series as well as several Star Trek projects.
With Abrams Bad Robot on his plate, Goldsman will also produce the film through his company Weed Road Pictures, with Hannah Minghella also on the board. Back in 2020, Francis Lawrence expressed interest in returning to Constantine, with the caveat that the character would not be available to us. Now, Warner Bros Pictures Group co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy have apparently shepherded a deal with the filmmakers and Reeves.
Since the first appearance of the DC Comics characters in 1985, John Constantine has been on the cover of DC Comics. In response to mixed reviews, it grossed $230 million worldwide at the box office, becoming the No. 15 highest-grossing film of 2005, according to Box Office Mojo.
Rachel Weisz as Angela Dodson, Shia LaBeouf as Chas, Djimon Hounsou as Midnite, and Tilda Swinton as Gabriel were also included in the original film. Is it possible that Warner Bros is knocking on a few of their doors?
Following his exciting face-off against the archangels Gabriel and Lucifer, Constantine seemed to open the way for other films, but only now is a sequel finally being developed. The news comes a couple years after it was announced that J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot would direct a Justice League Dark series for HBO Max, which memorably includes John Constantine among a group of supernatural heroes.
Since its release, there hasn't been much discussion about Justice League Dark, but it's possible that J.J. Abrams is involved in both Constantine-related projects.
Although this DC film may be a long way off, it's exciting to know that Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Constantine after all these years.
