Ethan Hawke Memories How He Crushed His Moulin Rouge Audition Before Losing The Role Of Ewan McGrego ...

One of Ewan McGregor's best roles in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! is as the young poet Christian. But did you know that Ethan Hawke might have been the one to display his singing talents and play Nicole Kidman? The Boyhood actor remembers the time he lost out to Ewan McGregor.

Moulin Rouge! is a star-crossed love story between a young English poet and a cabaret actress that was released in 2001. In an interview with ScreenRant, Hawke discussed how he believed the audition for Moulin Rouge! was one of his greatest screen tests of his life.

Ewan isn't interested in this because he's embarrassed, but I gave one of the greatest screen tests of my life for Moulin Rouge. I did not receive the part. This audition just goes to demonstrate how much I like Ewan's work. I went to see the film on opening day and loved it. So, I'll say, someday that audition will be seen and people will rethink.

If you can send me an email asking me to see my audition? Ethan Hawke was nominated in Boyhood as the aspiring musician father of the film's young lead. Both actors were in their late 20s, which would have been too big for the then-33-year-old.

While it may have appeared as a disappointment for the Dead Poets Society actor to lose the musical role, his career did not suffer. In fact, one of Hawke's best performances that same year was in Training Day, where he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. I'd imagine that Moulin Rouge! would have been a completely different film if this Golden Globe nominee had been in it. But then again, I'd need to see the audition footage for myself.

When you join your Moulin Rouge! competitor, fate gives you a different hand. In the Apple TV+ film Raymond and Ray, you meet two half-brothers who reunited at their father's funeral, and it will be featured in the 27th Busan International Film Festival's World Cinema section!

Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor have no trouble connecting in real life. Both actors have had successful careers starring in the roles that fate brought them. Add Raymond and Ray to your watchlist on October 21st.
