Since Ultimate's development, there's been a lot of discussion about the future of the Super Smash Bros. series, but if you ask Katsuhiro Harada about it, there's only one person who can handle it.
Katsuhiro Harada, director of Bandai Namco's next-gen fighter Tekken 8, was asked about his experience working with Sakurai on Kazuya, and he concluded that he is "probably" the only person who can produce the series due to his deep knowledge of different IPs.
Here's what he had to say:
Katsuhiro Harada: You mentioned Kazuya as a character, but actually, Bandai Namco Studios, when they were developing Smash Brothers, Sakurai-san was there all the time, I guess you could say, and we knew quite well what to expect and his personality. I think he was surprised when it came to making Kazuya for Smash Brothers, because he had already had his own thoughts about what makes Tekken "Tekken."
That was a surprise, in a positive way. But it also made us think that he has all of these different IPs in Smash Brothers, so to be able to do that, he's probably the only one that would be able to properly create that game. We always consider other kinds of fighting games or other games outside of Tekken and think about what we may learn from it.
What do you think the Smash Bros. series would be like without Sakurai's involvement? Any suggestions on who might help with the development of future titles? Leave a comment below.
