Yale vs Holy Cross Preview

Yale opens the season against No. 12 Holy Cross (2-0) on Saturday.

Derek Ng netted a 47-yard field goal for the win with 48 seconds left in the second quarter of that game, but Yale surrendered ten points in the final seven minutes of the half.

Holy Cross won a 10-3-2 record and an FCS playoff appearance, but the Crusaders fell short against Villanova. Yale finished 5-5 last year.

The Crusaders beat Merrimack 31-17 to open the season and then upset FBS Buffalo 37-31 when Sluka found Jalen Coker on a 46-yard touchdown run for the win.

We always ask, Why not Holy Cross? Jennifer Toland, Coker said via the Telegram and Gazettes. Everyone has their own idea who's going to do the job, who's going to go farther than everyone else. We believe here it will be us.

I was running for a long, long time, and Coker commented on the play I didnt know Sluka threw it yet. I looked back, and then I saw the ball and jumped up in the air. Its a see ball, catch ball, so I jumped up and caught it, and I reached the end zone.

Matthew Sluka, a solid quarterback at Holy Cross, has five touchdowns against an interception so far. Sluka is a threat on the ground with 6.5 yards per carry and a touchdown in two games.

Yale head coach Tony Reno reported that he has truly become a dual threat. He has obviously always been an outstanding athlete who is difficult to tackle and who just plays smart running the ball. He has developed into an extraordinary passer. That was at the end of last year, and obviously this year, he is improving even more.

Yale enters the season with high expectations, attempting to bounce back from a 5-5 campaign. The Bulldogs lost four games in one-score contests last season.

Nick Gargiulo, the Bulldogs' captain and tackle, said via the Yale Daily News Spencer King and Amelia Lower. Thats our huge advantage. Weve gone through the game week three times so at this point [so] its almost like we were on game four.
