Dr Salvador, also known as Chainsaw Man, is returning for the Resident Evil 4 remake, serving once more as the scourge of Leon Kennedy — or, more specifically, Leon Kennedy's neck. Capcom unveils the most frightening aspect of Ganados, who is apparently frightening because he looks like a regular guy.
While I do think Capcom's definition of "normal guy" extends to a parasite-infected maniac who is charging around with a chainsaw, there is a certain logic to the way Dr Salvador was created for the RE4 remake.
Several other variations of the Chainsaw Man were planned and discussed, according to Hirofumi Nakaoka, the art director for the coming survival game, with Capcom aiming to create a terrifying adversary.
“I liked the chainsaw villager,” Nakaoka adds, “so when we heard that he would return in this remake, we really gave a lot of thought to how he should look. Maybe giving him this really long coat. Other things we tried with Chainsaw just didn’t work out.
“So we went back and played the original once more, and we realized the thing about him is that he’s pretty normal.”
Nakaoka claims that making Dr Salvador too massive would render him too inhumane or unrecognizable. What's frightening is the idea that these were once regular, decent individuals, and this is what inspires Dr Salvador in the Resident Evil 4 remake.
Nakaoka says the game isn't scary: "If he were really muscular or looked non-human while holding a chainsaw," he'd just be a monster. When someone appears to be competent, but they're wearing a cowl and holding a chainsaw, that's scary. From the neck down his design isn't that different from other Ganado."
The new parry mechanism in RE4 should help you defeat the Chainsaw Man, although a useful weapon exploit from the original has been sadly nerfed. A lot of add-ons, including some additional treasures and collectibles, may also be locked within the Resident Evil 4 remake.
