The Sins of a Solar Empire 2 technical preview has reached a new stage, and that means the sci-fi 4X game now has multiplayer. Players may now join existing multiplayer games and take over for an AI faction, or for a player who has to leave. Other enhancements are included in the latest update, which includes a refresh for the research tree.
The introduction of multiplayer, according to Stardock and Ironclad, is an essential step for the early access period to Sins of a Solar Empire 2; the studios are hoping to gather as much player feedback as possible during this phase, and while what's provided in the technical preview is "only the tip of the iceberg," players should get a feel for the new game engine's capabilities.
Multiplayer is a way to join in and take over for another player's AI factions, or to invite friends using a unique game code.
"We've had colleagues join in ongoing discussions and completely destroy people who assumed they'd won," says Stardock publishing director Brian Clair. "We can't wait to see how our community responds to this feature, and this is only the beginning!"
The most recent update has also freshened up some ships with new models and textures. The TEC Ogrov Torpedo Cruiser, the Pirate Rogue, the Corsair, and Pillager ships will receive visual improvements.
If you're playing as part of a team or alliance, there's a nice new feature, including pings for attack, defend, and attention commands.
The entire list of changes can be seen on the official website. In the spring, expect the Vasari Loyalist faction to join the Vasari Rebels faction this summer. In autumn, expect the Advent Loyalist faction to arrive.
