Because Hollywood royalty is coming in hot, take a look at one of the most talked-about movies of 2022, Amsterdam, a period drama rife with con-men and murder, which gets its start with a lively trailer that introduces a remarkable array of new characters from the industry. So, let's get started mapping out the basics.
The upcoming film Amsterdam is directed and written by controversial filmmaker David O. Russell, who is no stranger to outrageous true-crime stories. His most well-known film is American Hustle, which was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, as well as acting nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence.
As Russell's reputation for working with the same actors for many projects has increased, Amsterdam is no exception. Christian Bale is co-starring with John David Washington and Margot Robbie as two soldiers and a nurse who are caught in the middle of a murder investigation years after an incident in Amsterdam.
The trailer for Bale, Robbie, and Washington follows three close-knit friends who are seen fleeing the scene of a murder, followed by law enforcement and other revenge-seeking criminals who want to see them pay for what they did.
Christian Bale as Burt
Burt, a ruthless, New York-accredited doctor who wears a glass eye in the aftermath of the war, is wanted for murder alongside his two best friends, fellow veteran Harold (Washington) and a nurse named Valerie (Robbie), in a similar vein to Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds.
Bale has been nominated for two additional Academy Awards for his roles as Michael Burry in The Big Short (2015) and Dick Cheney in Vice (2019), both of which were directed by Adam McKay (Dont Look Up).
John David Washington as Harold
Bale will play Harold, his partner in crime, a fellow war veteran, and attorney. The couple meet and become close before traveling to Amsterdam where they meet Valerie and begin their crime-filled, death-filled journey. They forged a bond, according to Burt.
Spike Lees 2018 true crime drama BlacKklansman got him a lot of recognition, including a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. He has previously starred in Christopher Nolans Tenet (2020) and Sam Levinsons Netflix original romance drama Malcolm & Marie (2021) opposite Zendaya.
Margot Robbie as Valerie
Margot Robbie, who plays the tough-as-nails nurse Valerie, remains calm, cool, and collected after being wounded in the war. In the end, she tells Burt and Harold to follow her lead, claiming that she had to stab a guy and that she had to hit a lady with a brick.
Robbie has already received two Academy Award nominations for her portrayal of American figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya (2018) and her role as a Fox News employee in Bombshell (2019). Next up, she will play Ken in Greta Gerwigs Barbie, which will be released in 2023.
