Ryan Grantham, a Riverdale alum, has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of his mother in 2020.

Grantham, a 24-year-old Vancouver actor, has previously appeared in Supernatural, iZombie, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. She murdered his mother Barbara Waite in March 2020 at their house in Squamish, British Columbia, killing her with a pistol. Waite was diagnosed with cancer at the time of her death on March 31.

Grantham was sentenced to life in prison on a second degree murder conviction on September 23, 2022. Justice Kathleen Ker ruled Grantham must serve 14 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole.

[Grantham] gave a statement to the judge saying that he would dedicate the remainder of his life to rehabilitating himself and helping others, according to Granthams lawyer Chris Johnson of Johnson Doyle Nelson & Anderson of Vancouver. So he's on the road to getting better.

According to CBC, Grantham planned to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and loaded his car with three rifles, 12 Molotov cocktails, camping supplies, and a map directing to Rideau Cottage, where Trudeau lived with his family at the time. He instead went to the local police station to surrender.

Grantham's alleged motive for killing his mother was to distract her from seeing the harm he intended to cause to the world and himself, according to CBC reports. Lisa Grantham, Grantham's sister, discovered Waites' body April 1.

Ryan gave her no opportunity to defend herself, causing me to wonder if she would be released from prison, according to Complex (via People). Both she and her mothers sister both fear his release.

Because of Grantham's petite stature, Justice Ker did not recommend his going to a maximum security prison.
