GoldenEye 007's Return: "We just kept talking till we made it happen" ...

The planets aligned a few weeks ago, with Nintendo revealing that the N64 classic GoldenEye 007 would be re-released on modern platforms. It's a stroke of luck, considering how long the game has been stuck in licensing hell.

Craig Duncan, Rare's CEO, has provided some insight on the behind-the-scenes of a GI Live discussion. The team actually attempted to get the game out for the company's 30th anniversary, but licensing concerns got in the way. In the end, Rare simply persevered and was able to make it happen:

Craig Duncan: To be honest, it took us longer than I expected. We worked to get it scheduled for when we did Rare Replay back in 2015, which I guess was Rares' 30th anniversary.

As you can see, things involving licenses and published games are a lot of work... there were lots of discussions, lots of conversations with our Nintendo friends, the folks at MGM, and the folks at Xbox, and we just kept talking until we achieved our goal. Im really proud of that.

GoldenEye 007 is coming back to Nintendo's Switch in the future, although the game's solo and multiplayer modes might be different. There's even an online mode for the Switch Online version.

A new Xbox version is also on the way, with improvements, a native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD, and a faster framerate (via Pure Xbox).
